I had a conversation with someone recently that claimed that the gang war on the streets over drugs would be happening regardless of prohibition.
In November 2008, John Nault shot a stranger in the abdomen in the bus shelter in front of Portage Place. He explains why.
Nault admitted to using a high-powered handgun to shoot a 29-year-old man in the abdomen at close range inside the Winnipeg Transit shelter at the Portage Place Shopping centre on Nov. 28, 2008.
The shooting, which took place over the lunch-hour, became a public spectacle in an area of the city often criticized at the time for high rates of crime and drug-dealing.
Nault's lawyer, Martin Glazer, said Nault suspected the victim was dealing drugs in an area he considered his own.
The lifestyles of both the victim and Nault "collided," Glazer said. Nault saw the victim dealing on "his turf and he confronted him, he told him to leave or he'd shoot him," Glazer said.
Nault never intended to kill anyone, he said.
"His intent was to wound the victim and get him to stop drug dealing at this location, to ward off his competition," Glazer said.
That is clear cut evidence of a shooting that took place only because of the government prohibition on drugs.
Listen people, there are not shootings in the street over who can sell you a beer, because anyone can go to the store and buy a beer from a number of manufacturers, there is no restriction. End prohibition and this will not happen anymore.
FAIL 2:
John Nault shot a stranger in the stomach in cold blood, lucky for him that man didn't die.
BUT..
...pleaded guilty Tuesday to a single count of discharging a restricted firearm with intent to wound...
Nault's guilty plea comes one day after a three-week-long attempted murder trial was slated to start. His admitting to a lesser charge came after a plea deal was reached between the Crown and his lawyer.
Nault was given double-time credit of 44 months for the time he's spent on remand waiting to deal with his case. He will have to serve an additional five years and three months.
So he pleas guilty to a lesser charge and is guaranteed to serve time, seems like a WIN doesn't it? Well it isn't, it's a FAIL because he does not have to face the true consequences of his actions, he gets away with attempted murder. He will be out in 5 years, and this will be his forth time in federal prison! What are the chances that he comes out of prison "reformed"?
Plus he got double time credit for the 22 months he's been in remand, for some arbitrary reason, which makes 2 years turn into 4 of a 9 year sentence, so 5 left to go. That's about how much time it takes to complete a University course, and that's how long he will serve for this crime.
The "Justice" System, I am embarrassed.
